Joseph Casamento is the Morris Cohen (1933) Career Development Professor and Assistant Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), School of Engineering. His research focuses on semiconducting materials and dielectrics, heterostructure design, thin film synthesis, and device fabrication, particularly in nitride semiconductors and ferroelectric materials. Applications include high-speed RF transistors, neuromorphic computing, and smart systems.
Education: BS in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor; MS and PhD in Materials Science and Engineering from Cornell University. Postdoctoral work at Penn State University’s Center for 3D Ferroelectric Microelectronics (DOE Frontier Research Center).
Research interests emphasize novel synthesis approaches for ferroelectric materials, structure-property relationships, and device simulation. Key applications include heterogeneous integration, high-power devices, and neuromorphic systems. Awards include the 2023 Early Career Network Representative (DOE) and multiple Best Student Presentation Awards (2022).
Labs/Teams: Leads the Nitride Materials and Devices Group at MIT. Collaborates on projects involving ferroelectric HEMTs, multiferroic systems, and semiconductor heterostructures.
