Joseph Bristow is a Professor at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he has taught since 1996. His academic work spans Victorian and modern literature, with a focus on British aestheticism, Decadence, and theories of sexuality. He has held significant roles at UCLA's Clark Library, organizing NEH-sponsored conferences and seminars, and serves as editor of Palgrave Studies in Nineteenth-Century Writing and Culture.

His research interests emphasize British aestheticism (notably Oscar Wilde), Decadence, and LGBTQ+ literary studies, with a strong focus on Victorian poetry and late 19th-century cultural history. He has also explored topics such as forgery, childhood cultures, and the intersections of literary theory and history.
Professor Bristow has directed multiple NEH-supported summer seminars, including The Wilde Archive (2007) and Oscar Wilde and His Circle (2012). He has chaired doctoral dissertation committees on themes like feminine singularity, evolutionary aestheticism, and tourism discourses in Romantic and Victorian literature.
