Research Interests
Professor Sider's scholarship centers on nineteenth-century poetry and poetics, with significant contributions to genre theory, aesthetics, and public sphere theory. His work critically examines aestheticism and decadence, Pre-Raphaelite art and poetry, and twentieth-century literary traditions, consistently bridging Romantic-Victorian studies with broader cultural theory.
Publications and Ongoing Projects
His monograph Parting Words: Victorian Poetry and Public Address (University of Virginia Press, 2018) analyzes the valedictory mode in Victorian poetry as a mechanism for constructing intimacy within mass culture. Current research focuses on Snows of Yesteryear: Aestheticism and the Poetry of Imitation, exploring sophisticated nostalgia in aestheticist poetry from Romanticism to the mid-twentieth century. His published articles address John Ruskin, Alfred Tennyson, dramatic monologues, nineteenth-century balladry, and Victorian aesthetic theory, demonstrating consistent engagement with poetic form and cultural context.
