Brian D. Joseph is a distinguished academic serving as Distinguished University Professor of Linguistics and The Kenneth E. Naylor Professor of South Slavic Linguistics at The Ohio State University. He holds affiliations with the American Philosophical Society and the Academy of Sciences and Arts of Kosovo. His career spans over four decades, with roles including President of the Linguistic Society of America (2019) and leadership in academic organizations.
Education: BA in Linguistics from Yale University (1973), MA (1976), and PhD (1978) from Harvard University. He has held fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, American Council of Learned Societies, and Fulbright Program.
Research focuses on historical linguistics, particularly Greek language evolution within Indo-European and Balkan contexts. His work bridges genealogical and geographic influences. He has authored/co-authored 5 books, edited 20+ volumes, and published over 300 scholarly articles. Notable awards include honorary doctorates from La Trobe and University of Patras, and fellowship recognitions from major scientific and linguistic societies.
