Alexander Lubotsky is a full professor of Comparative Indo-European Linguistics at Leiden University since 1999, with a career spanning over four decades. His affiliations include leadership roles in major academic institutions and editorial responsibilities for key linguistic series.
- Education: PhD in Comparative Indo-European Linguistics from Leiden University (1987), MA (doctoraal, 1980), and BA (kandidaats, 1978) in Indo-Iranian studies; Linguistics training at Lomonosov University, Moscow (1973–1976).
Lubotsky's research focuses on Indo-European and Indo-Iranian linguistics, etymology, and historical phonology. His work involves analyzing Vedic and Old Iranian texts, tracing non-Indo-European substrates in Indo-Iranian languages, and studying the Phrygian language. His publications reflect a concentration on semantic shifts, phonological patterns, and comparative methodologies.
Notable scientific awards include membership in the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) since 2003. He has secured significant grants from NWO and Brill for the Indo-European Etymological Dictionary project, as well as a HERA grant for interdisciplinary studies on ancient European multilingualism.
