معرفی
Josep Mas Pla is a Full Professor in the Department of Environmental Sciences at the Universitat de Girona (UdG) since 2006, and a Research Professor at the Catalan Institute for Water Research (ICRA) since 2013. He holds a PhD in Geology from Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (1988) and a PhD in Hydrology and Water Resources from the University of Arizona (1993).
His research focuses on hydrogeological dynamics, groundwater contamination, and water resources management in Mediterranean environments. Key areas include:
- Regional hydrogeological dynamics based on field work, hydrochemical and isotopic data
- Groundwater flow systems at large scale in mountain and basin areas
- Occurrence and transport of contaminants, particularly nitrates and emerging organic contaminants like pharmaceuticals
- Stream-aquifer interactions and their role in water resource availability
- Climate change impacts on groundwater resources
His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on emerging contaminants in groundwater systems, particularly pharmaceuticals and antibiotic resistance. The research spans multiple disciplines including hydrogeology, environmental science, water quality, and public health, with applications to water resource management under climate change conditions.
His scientific contributions have been recognized with:
- Scopus h-Index: 28 / 2686 cites (April 2024)
- Google Scholar h-Index: 30 / 3799 cites; h10-Index: 42 (April 2024)
- Fulbright Scholar award
Dr. Mas-Pla has directed 6 doctoral theses and 15 master's theses, with current research projects including TREASURE (2024-2027) as Coordinator, focusing on groundwater and reclaimed water for drought adaptation, and ADVANCE4WATER (2023-2027) where he leads the EC-FATE subproject on emerging contaminants in groundwater. He serves as Associate Editor for Hydrogeology Journal (Springer, Q1) since 2019 and coordinates the consolidated research group 'Applied and Environmental Geology (GAiA)' recognized by the Catalan government since 2009.
