Jose Rizo-Rey is a Professor at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in the Department of Biophysics. He serves as the Chair of the Molecular Biophysics graduate program and conducts research on the mechanisms of neurotransmitter release and intracellular membrane fusion using structural biology and biophysical techniques.
- B.Sc. in Organic Chemistry, University of Barcelona (1981)
- Theoretical Physics B.Sc., University of Barcelona (1988)
- M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry, University of Barcelona (1988)
His research focuses on synaptic transmission, emphasizing SNARE proteins, synaptotagmin, and membrane fusion dynamics. He employs NMR spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography, and molecular dynamics simulations to study these processes.
His recent publications highlight SNARE complex interactions, synaptotagmin's role in calcium-dependent fusion, and Munc18/Munc13 regulation of exocytosis. These works span structural biology, neuroscience, and cell biology.
Dr. Rizo collaborates extensively in neuroscience research, with affiliations in both the Departments of Biophysics and Biochemistry at UTSW. His lab homepage details ongoing studies on synaptic machinery.
