Joost Rekveld is affiliated with the School of Arts at University College Ghent (Belgium) as an artistic researcher since 2017. Previously, he served as Course Director of the ArtScience Interfaculty at the Royal Conservatoire and Royal Academy of Art in The Hague (2008–2014). His work bridges media archaeology, experimental film, and technology critique, focusing on the historicity and agency of devices that shaped electronic imagery.
Rekveld’s practice includes creating experimental moving images through dialogue with machines, media-critical reflections, and toolmaking. His films and installations have been showcased globally at venues like the Barbican (London), Centre Pompidou (Paris), and Moderna Museet (Stockholm). He has collaborated with composers, dance companies, and theatre groups, and has been active as a curator and lecturer since 1990.
Notably, his films were the focus of retrospectives at the International Film Festival Rotterdam (2017) and Ann Arbor Film Festival, alongside screenings at the Tate Modern and other major institutions. His interdisciplinary work emphasizes understanding human-technology relationships through artistic and experimental approaches.
