Simon Arnett Jones is a Professor of Inflammation Biology at Cardiff University's School of Medicine, affiliated with The College of Biomedical & Life Sciences. He serves as Co-Director and Lead for Multimorbidity at the Systems Immunity Research Institute and previously held roles including Dean of Research (2017–2021) and College Theme Lead for Infection, Immunology & Inflammation (2015–2020). Jones holds dual expertise in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology with an affiliated focus on Cell & Developmental Biology.
Education: PhD in Biochemistry (University of Bristol, 1994) and BSc in Applied Biological Sciences (Bristol Polytechnic, 1990). His research focuses on cytokine signaling pathways (STAT1/STAT3), rheumatoid arthritis mechanisms, and anti-microbial host defense. He leads major grants totaling over £16M, including Versus Arthritis Programme Grants and collaborations with pharmaceutical companies like GSK and Mestag Therapeutics.
Awards include the Bolzmann Award (2004) for cytokine biology contributions and Fellowship in both the Royal Society of Biology and Learned Society of Wales. He chairs editorial boards (Journal of Biological Chemistry, Frontiers in Immunology) and advises organizations like Versus Arthritis and the Medical Research Council. Jones actively engages in policy roles, including Wales' Health & Care Research grants committees and global panels on immunology research.
