Jonathon Stillman is a Professor and Chair of Hiring, Retention, and Tenure Promotion (HRTP) at San Francisco State University, where he has been affiliated since 2005. His work integrates Marine Biology, Physiology, and Functional Genomics to study climate change impacts on coastal organisms.
He earned his Ph.D. at Oregon State University and leads the Stillman Lab, which focuses on Environmental and Evolutionary Physiology of marine invertebrates like porcelain crabs, corals, and coccolithophores. Research tools include in vivo physiological measurements, transcriptomics, and comparative thermal tolerance studies across latitudes.
Research Trends: Recent publications highlight
- genome-scale responses to marine heat waves
- pH-temperature interactions in crustaceans
- multi-stressor physiology (ocean acidification, salinity, hypoxia)
- evolutionary constraints on thermal adaptation
- cross-generational plasticity in climate resilience
- functional genomics resource development for crustaceans
Teaching & Outreach: Stillman teaches courses like BIOL630 and BIOL617 at SFSU, including a field course in French Polynesia. His lab actively engages in anti-racism initiatives, science communication, and citizen science projects while maintaining the Stillman Lab website as a resource hub.
