Richard Forward is an Emeritus Professor of Zoology and Bass Fellow at Duke University, affiliated with the Marine Science & Conservation Division at Duke Marine Lab. His research focuses on the physiological ecology of marine crustaceans and fishes, particularly sensory physiology, behavioral responses to environmental cues, and biological rhythms. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of California, Santa Barbara (1969) and a B.A. from Stanford University (1965).
- Education:
- Ph.D., University of California, Santa Barbara (1969)
- B.A., Stanford University (1965)
His research investigates how marine organisms respond to light, temperature, salinity, and chemical cues, with applications to diel vertical migration and tidal stream transport. He has received grants from the National Science Foundation for REU (Research Experiences for Undergraduates) programs in estuarine and coastal marine systems. Notable awards include the Bass Fellowship.
Recent publications explore topics such as blue crab postlarvae behavior, vertical migration patterns, circadian rhythms in crab larvae, and chemical signaling in fiddler crabs. His work bridges physiological mechanisms with ecological and evolutionary processes in marine environments.
- Grants:
- REU Site grants (2016–2021) for undergraduate research in estuarine and coastal systems
He contributes to Duke Marine Laboratory, a key research facility for marine science and conservation studies.
