Jonathan Wenk is the Jack and Linda Gill Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of Kentucky, with a joint appointment in the Department of Surgery. He holds a Ph.D. (2008), M.S. (2005), and B.S. (2003) in Mechanical Engineering from UC Berkeley and Purdue University, respectively.
His research focuses on cardiovascular mechanics, finite element methods, and multi-scale modeling, with applications to heart disease and surgical interventions. He has pioneered computational models to study myocardial infarction, mitral valve dynamics, and baroreflex regulation in cardiovascular systems.
Key research themes include:
- Biomechanical analysis of cardiac growth/remodeling
- Development of patient-specific computational tools for heart failure
- Integration of machine learning into cardiovascular simulations
Recent work emphasizes:
- Mechanical interactions between ventricles and valves
- Material properties of infarcted myocardium
- Optimization of surgical repair strategies
His interdisciplinary approach bridges mechanical engineering, surgery, and biomedical imaging, with collaborations spanning academia, industry, and clinical practice.
