Jonathan Ward

Jonathan Ward is a Senior Lecturer in Illustration at the University of the West of England, Bristol, within the Department of ACE – Creative and Cultural Industries. His work bridges artistic practice, design, and education, with a strong emphasis on artists’ books and print-based media.

His artistic practice explores childhood memories, human behavior, and tactile engagement through innovative book forms. He has exhibited and curated internationally in Europe, Mexico, and the USA. Notable projects include Inside Cover and HOME, the latter winning the Birgit Skiöld Trust Memorial Award and being acquired by the Victoria and Albert Museum for the Sky Arts Memory Palace exhibition in 2012.

Jonathan founded his own design and publishing company, MakingSpace, in 1995, following four years with the Dutch artists’ book publisher Plaatsmaken. He integrates professional practice with academic teaching, contributing to illustration and printmaking education at UWE Bristol.
