Jonathan Richards serves as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Music and Director of the Occidental Jazz Ensemble at Occidental College, appointed in 2021, with additional faculty duties at Pasadena City College.
His academic training includes:
- B.A. from the University of Southern California (USC) Thornton School of Music under classical bass virtuoso Nico Abondolo and jazz legend John Clayton
- M.F.A. from California Institute of the Arts
Richards' creative scholarship centers on jazz performance, composition, and cross-disciplinary media work. His professional practice spans:
- Collaborations with David Foster, Khalid, Toni Braxton, and the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra
- Recording projects for Beyoncé’s The Gift, Katharine McPhee’s PBS Soundstage Special, and The American Music Awards
- Scoring for HBO's 'The Night Of', HULU's 'Mrs. America', and Netflix's 'Dear White People'
As an educator, he actively mentors students through ensemble leadership and innovative curriculum development at Occidental College.
