Jonathan R. Brestoff is an Associate Professor (tenured) in the Department of Pathology and Immunology at Washington University School of Medicine (WUSM). His research explores the intersection of immunology and metabolism, particularly how immune cells regulate fat tissue function.
- Education: BS from Skidmore College (2008), MPH from University College Cork (2010), MD/PhD from the University of Pennsylvania (2016).
Dr. Brestoff investigates immunometabolic pathways, focusing on intercellular mitochondria transfer and its role in metabolic diseases like obesity and type 2 diabetes. His lab employs cutting-edge techniques in immunology, metabolism, and mitochondria biology to uncover novel therapeutic targets.
Selected publications highlight his work on mitochondrial dynamics in cancer immunity (2021), standardized nomenclature for mitochondria transfer (2022), and lipin 1's role in metabolic health (2022). His research has led to real-world applications, including mitochondria transplantation for genetic diseases and a metabolic diagnostic tool in clinical use.
Scientific Awards:
- NIH Director’s Early Independence Award (DP5)
- Children’s Discovery Institute Fellowship
- AAI Early Career Faculty Award
- Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship
- George J. Mitchell Scholarship
Dr. Brestoff’s innovations include the Clambake metabolic cage analytic tool (licensed to industry) and a novel anti-obesity drug in development. He also directs WUSM’s Immunometabolism Initiative.
