Dr. Jonathan Lipton is Assistant Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School and a sleep specialist at Boston Children's Hospital. His research investigates circadian clock mechanisms in neurodevelopmental disorders, focusing on how disrupted biological timing contributes to neurological pathologies.
Research examines mTOR-dependent regulation of protein synthesis by circadian clock proteins, particularly BMAL1. His laboratory discovered that BMAL1 phosphorylation by S6K1 couples circadian rhythms to translational control, revealing novel intersections between timing systems and cellular metabolism. Current projects explore how these mechanisms affect synaptic plasticity and are disrupted in tuberous sclerosis complex.
Publications demonstrate consistent focus on: 1) Molecular clock interactions with mTOR signaling, 2) Mitochondrial dynamics in neurological disorders, and 3) Translational regulation in neural development. Methodologies include animal models, live-cell imaging, and behavioral phenotyping.
Scientific Awards:
- Sleep Research Society Young Investigator Award
Funded by NIH and private foundations, his team collaborates with neurogenetics and sleep medicine programs to develop chronotherapeutic interventions.
