Professor Jonathan Johnston is a Professor of Chronobiology and Integrative Physiology at the University of Surrey's School of Biosciences, within the Section of Chronobiology. He holds academic roles including Reader and Senior Lecturer in Neuroscience. His research focuses on biological rhythms, particularly circadian mechanisms influencing metabolism, endocrinology, and physiological adaptation to environmental cycles. Key projects include studying skeletal muscle metabolism rhythms and the impact of meal timing on metabolic health.
Research interests encompass circadian clocks' roles in regulating body temperature, sleep, hormone secretion, and cell division. His work addresses how light-dark cycles, meal timing, and jetlag affect metabolism and diabetes risk. Notable studies include investigations into metabolic disruptions caused by circadian misalignment and the development of chrono-nutrition strategies.
Publications highlight advancements in understanding human metabolic rhythms, time-restricted eating adherence, and circadian regulation in vascular and adipose tissues. Supervised PhD students include Dr Paul Jefcoate, Dr Adam Hargreaves, and Dr Valeria Mastrullo, focusing on topics like melatonin receptor regulation and metabolic responses to circadian disruption.
Teaching includes courses on integrative human physiology, nutritional metabolism, and research methodologies. His lab contributes to translating chronobiological findings into clinical and public health applications, emphasizing the interplay between circadian systems and metabolic disorders.
