Professor Debra J. Skene is a Professor of Neuroendocrinology and Section Lead of Chronobiology at the University of Surrey's School of Biosciences, part of the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences. She holds a B Pharm, MSc, and PhD. Her research focuses on human circadian timing systems, chrononutrition, and the effects of light, melatonin, and shift work on health. She has authored over 190 publications and secured funding from the EU, BBSRC, and NIH.
Education:
- B Pharm
- MSc
- PhD
Research interests include circadian rhythms in visually impaired individuals, shift workers, and older adults, alongside melatonin's role in sleep disorders. Recent studies explore meal timing's impact on metabolic rhythms and urban-rural differences in chrononutrition.
Awards:
- Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award (2011–2016)
- Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences (2024)
Advising and grants: Supervises PhD students on bioscience and medicine programs. Current advisee: Dr Roberta Bonomo. Funded projects include EU Horizon 2020 and NIH grants.
Labs/teams: Leads the Chronobiology Section, investigating light-melatonin interactions and circadian disorders in diverse populations.
