Graham McGinnis, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Nutrition Sciences at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He joined UNLV in 2018 after completing his doctoral training in exercise physiology at Auburn University and postdoctoral training at the University of Alabama and Birmingham Center for Exercise Medicine. Dr. McGinnis directs the Exercise Physiology & Integrated Chronobiology (EPIC) Lab, where his research explores the complex relationship between circadian rhythms and exercise physiology.
Dr. McGinnis's research primarily focuses on how 24-hour physiological cycles (circadian rhythms) impact the body's response to exercise. His laboratory investigates how exercise can be optimally timed to maximize training adaptations in both cardiac and skeletal muscle tissues. A significant portion of his current work examines 'Social Jetlag'—a novel form of circadian rhythm disruption—and its effects on exercise physiology and health outcomes. His research employs both human and animal models to uncover fundamental mechanisms linking circadian biology with exercise adaptation.
Dr. McGinnis's publication record shows a clear progression of research from basic exercise physiology to more specialized chronobiological investigations. His recent work (2022-2025) demonstrates increasing specialization in circadian exercise physiology, with numerous publications examining social jetlag, chronotype effects on performance, and timing of exercise interventions. His research spans multiple disciplines including cardiology, neurology (particularly migraine research), environmental health, and metabolic physiology.
Dr. McGinnis has secured funding from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) of the NIH for his research on social jetlag. His scholarly contributions include collaborative work with the International Society of Sports Nutrition, producing position stands on ultra-marathon nutrition and sodium bicarbonate supplementation.
