Dr. Silke Kiessling is a Lecturer in Chronobiology at the University of Surrey's School of Biosciences, within the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences. Her research focuses on the intersection of circadian rhythms and gastrointestinal health, exploring how disruptions to biological clocks—such as those caused by shift work or jet lag—contribute to diseases like obesity, inflammation, and cancer. She leads the Kiessling Lab, investigating the role of circadian clocks in regulating gut barrier function, immune responses, and microbiota dynamics.
Dr. Kiessling has supervised multiple postgraduate students, including Elizaveta Gorbunova (TUM & Surrey), Yunhui Niu (TUM), Marjolein Heddes (TUM), and Baraa Altaha (TUM). Her teaching portfolio includes courses on gastrointestinal physiology, renal medicine, pharmacology, and biochemistry. Notable research contributions include studies on microbiome rhythmicity, circadian meal timing interventions, and the impact of environmental stressors on circadian gene expression in animal models.
Her research highlights the bidirectional relationship between circadian systems and gastrointestinal health, emphasizing the microbiome's role as a mediator. Key findings include the therapeutic potential of timing-based interventions to mitigate inflammation and the predictive value of arrhythmic microbiome signatures for metabolic disorders.
