Dr. Jonathan Hartmann is a Lecturer I at the Harry W. Bass Jr. School of Arts, Humanities, and Technology, University of Texas at Dallas. He specializes in rhetoric, professional/technical communication, and copyediting. His roles include serving as Copy Editor for the Athenaeum Review and Development Chair of the Universal Access Employee Resource Group. Hartmann holds a PhD in English (American Literature) from CUNY Graduate Center (2005), an MA in Cinema Studies from NYU (1993), and a BA in English and Film from University of Michigan (1988).
His research focuses on African American studies, 19th-21st century American literature, documentary film, and narrative theory. Notable projects include studies on Edgar Allan Poe's marketing strategies and Melvin Van Peebles' cinematic influences. Hartmann has received multiple academic fellowships including a 2003 Writing Fellowship from CUNY.
He actively contributes to scholarly communities through peer reviews for journals like ESQ and Digital Humanities Quarterly. His professional affiliations include the National Council of Teachers of English and the National Alliance of Independent Writers and Editors (NAIWE). In 2011, he received a $2,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities for research on place in African-American autobiography.
