Jason Richards is an Associate Professor of English at Rhodes College, where he has been teaching since 2008. He earned his Ph.D. in English from the University of Florida in 2005, following M.A. (2000) and B.A. (1997) degrees in English and Comparative Literature/Classics at California State University, Long Beach. His work focuses on intersections of race, literature, and national identity in early and nineteenth-century American contexts.

His research spans Gothic studies, postcolonial theory, critical race theory, and modernity studies. He examines how racial and cultural imitativeness shaped U.S. literature and national identity (1770–1860) and analyzes Edgar Allan Poe's works through globalization and modernity lenses. Current projects include Poe in the Modern Maelstrom, exploring transnational contexts of Poe's writing.
His publications appear in venues like ARIEL, Novel, and African American Review, focusing on blackface minstrelsy, race in literature, and Gothic themes. He has also contributed reviews of Poe scholarship and anti-colonialism entries to reference works.
