Dr. Kelly’s research explores intersections of American Romanticism, Gothic literature, and cultural identity. He has published extensively on Edgar Allan Poe, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Washington Irving, with a focus on themes like racial identity, psychological horror, and mythological symbolism. Recent work includes analyses of Rebecca Harding Davis’s critique of individualism and Lacanian theory in Poe’s works.
His scholarship reveals trends in 19th-century American literary realism, psychoanalytic interpretation, and interdisciplinary approaches to myth and aesthetics. Notably, his 2022 article in ESQ: A Journal of Nineteenth-Century American Literature and Culture re-examines gender and labor dynamics in Life in the Iron Mills.
Dr. Kelly co-advises the Manuscript Society, a student creative writing collective that publishes the annual Manuscript journal. He has presented at major conferences such as the Modern Language Association and Northeast Modern Language Association, often connecting literary analysis to broader philosophical and cultural frameworks.
