Terence Whalen is an Associate Professor in the Department of English at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC), part of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. His research focuses on 19th-century American literature, the literary foundations of the Civil War, the political economy of literature, and the life and works of Edgar Allan Poe. He is the author of Edgar Allan Poe and the Masses (Princeton University Press, 1999), which redefines Poe’s role in American literature and won the 2000 Patrick F. Quinn Award.
Whalen’s work combines historical research with literary theory, examining how economic and social contexts influenced Poe’s writing and the broader development of American literature. His publications explore themes such as capitalism, slavery, and the rise of mass culture in antebellum America. He can be contacted at twhalen@uic.edu.
