Dr Jonathan Gross is a Senior Lecturer in Culture, Media & Creative Industries at King’s College London, part of the Faculty of Arts & Humanities. He joined the Department of Culture, Media & Creative Industries (CMCI) in 2015, following roles at the Universities of Leeds and Sheffield. His interdisciplinary work spans cultural policy, cultural participation, and cultural politics, with a focus on hope, crisis, and care within cultural contexts. Gross is Department Education Lead and previously Programme Director for the MA Arts & Cultural Management, emphasizing critical and creative engagement with culture and media.
His research, funded by AHRC and Horizon 2020, includes projects like Developing Inclusive & Sustainable Creative Economies and Future Festivals South Africa, exploring pandemic impacts on cultural institutions. Notable outputs include an oral history of the UK’s Creative Industries Mapping Document and a forthcoming book on art’s role in crisis-induced hope. Gross collaborates with policy makers, cultural organizations, and international communities, contributing to policy recommendations and cultural governance frameworks.
A Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, he teaches across BA/MA programs and has served as an external examiner at Queen Margaret University. His work bridges research and pedagogy, fostering student engagement with cultural systems’ potential. Key publications include studies on cultural democracy, pandemic adaptations of festivals, and ecological approaches to creative economies. Gross regularly engages with public audiences through events at venues like the Barbican and academic outlets like Futures.
