Dr. Stephanie Janes is a Lecturer in Interactive Media at King’s College London’s Department of Culture, Media & Creative Industries (CMCI), part of the Faculty of Arts & Humanities. She joined King’s in 2018 with a British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowship researching immersive promotional media (IPM), focusing on VR/AR technologies in marketing strategies. Previously, she held roles as a Research Assistant at Royal Holloway and Liverpool John Moores University, and taught as a Visiting Tutor at Royal Holloway and the University of East London.
Education: BA in Film & Literature (University of Warwick, 2008), MA in Film & Television Studies (Warwick, 2009), PhD in Media Arts (Royal Holloway, 2015) titled Players and Puppetmasters: Producer/Consumer Relationships in Hollywood’s Promotional Alternate Reality Games.
Research Interests: Immersive media (VR/AR/MR), audience/user research, Alternate Reality Games (ARGs), digital cultures, and promotional media. Current work explores inclusive methodologies for immersive experience design and the role of IPM in the UK’s Creative Economy. Her PhD analyzed ARGs’ impact on fan theories and consumer empowerment.
Publications focus on immersive media, ARGs, and digital marketing, with recent works addressing VR’s sociotechnical imaginaries and cultural access during the pandemic. Awards include the British Academy Fellowship and Higher Education Academy Fellowship.
Advising/Grants: Active in the Research Centre for Attention Studies. Her fellowship and prior roles involved ERC/AHRC-funded projects like ADAPT TV History and Forgotten TV Drama. She co-edited Kinephanos journal (2017).
Labs/Teams: Engaged with King’s CMCI’s interdisciplinary research on media industries and XR technologies.
