Jonathan Daly is a Professor and Associate Chair of the Department of History at the University of Illinois at Chicago, within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. His research focuses on late imperial Russia, early Soviet history, intellectual history, and comparative development, particularly the rise of Western power. He has authored or co-authored numerous books, including Autocracy under Siege, The Watchful State, and Seven Myths of the Russian Revolution. His work explores topics such as revolutionary movements, security policing, criminal justice systems, and the global impact of the Russian Revolution.
Research interests include the intersection of state and society in Russian history, the evolution of legal and political institutions, and the comparative analysis of Western and Soviet development. Daly’s recent projects include an intellectual biography of historian Richard Pipes and the analysis of Cold War historiography.
