Jonathan Davis is an Associate Professor at Anglia Ruskin University, affiliated with the Faculty of Arts, Humanities, Education and Social Sciences. He serves as the Director of the Labour History Research Unit (LHRU) and is based in Cambridge. His research focuses on 20th-century Russian history, Soviet-era studies, Cold War dynamics, and British Labour Party history. He teaches modules on Soviet history, global history, and the Cold War.
Jon holds a PhD in Anglo-Soviet History from De Montfort University, an MSc in Russian and East European Studies (University of Birmingham), and a BA in History and Politics (De Montfort University). He is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a member of the Study Group on the Russian Revolution and British International History Group.
His research interests include Soviet-British relations, Labour socialism, and the global implications of 1980s political and economic shifts. He has authored or co-edited books such as Historical Dictionary of the Russian Revolution (2020), The Global 1980s (2019), and Labour and the Left in the 1980s (2018). His work bridges historical analysis with contemporary relevance, examining themes like ideological evolution and geopolitical tensions.
Jon has supervised PhD theses on topics including Labour Party-Socialist Democrats relations, Stalin and the Korean War, and Putin’s use of history. He actively advises students in Soviet, Labour, and Cold War history. His teaching includes modules like Russia: Revolution and Reaction and Going Global: Making the Modern World, 1979–1999.
He frequently engages with media and public outreach, contributing to BBC Radio programs and The Conversation. His recent presentations include discussions on Mikhail Gorbachev’s legacy and the fall of the Berlin Wall.
