Gregory Afinogenov is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at Georgetown University. He holds a PhD in Russian history from Harvard University and a BA in history and philosophy from Fordham University. His research focuses on imperial Russian history, global intelligence networks, Soviet cybernetics, and cross-cultural exchanges in Eurasia.
His first major work, *Spies and Scholars: Chinese Secrets and Imperial Russia’s Quest for World Power* (2020), examines Russian intelligence operations in Qing China and their global implications. He has also explored topics ranging from Soviet-era Cold War creatures to pastoral poetry in 18th-century New York. His writings have appeared in academic journals and public platforms like *n+1* and the *London Review of Books*.
Afinogenov teaches courses on Imperial Russian history and broader themes in global history. His research bridges traditional historiography with interdisciplinary approaches, emphasizing the interconnectedness of early modern empires. He has reviewed significant works on Russian, Chinese, and Eurasian history, contributing to scholarly debates on Orientalism, colonial diplomacy, and intellectual history.
