Dr. Jonathan Ablitt is a Research Fellow and Research Associate in the Children’s Social Care Research and Development Centre (CASCADE) at Cardiff University’s School of Social Sciences. He specializes in ethnography, ethnomethodology, and membership categorisation analysis, with a focus on social policy, criminology, and urban studies. His current projects include evaluating police engagement in secondary schools across England and Wales, funded by the Youth Endowment Fund, and leading an evidence review on profit-making in children’s residential and foster care.
Previously, he conducted evaluations of Action for Children’s Serious Organised Crime Early Intervention Service and the Welsh Basic Income Pilot. His PhD (2021, funded by the Economic and Social Research Council) explored urban park interactions between park rangers and the public in Cardiff. Dr. Ablitt is a Fellow of the Security, Crime and Intelligence Innovation Institute (SCIII), founder of the Cardiff Ethnomethodology, Ethnography, Interaction and Talk (CEEIT) Research Group, and co-convener of the Cardiff Ethnography Group. He contributes to the Youth, Society and Risk Research Development Group within CASCADE.
His research interests span child protection, criminal exploitation, public space dynamics, and policy implementation. Awards include his SCIII Fellowship. He has published extensively on topics ranging from youth diversion programs to theoretical sociology, with a commitment to applied research addressing societal challenges.
