Dr Fiona Long is a Research Associate and PhD student in the School of Social Sciences at Cardiff University. Her roles include evaluating a housing-first project for homeless youth in Wales and assessing parental advocacy programs across England. She holds a PhD in Social Sciences from Cardiff University, focusing on ethnographic studies of homelessness. Her research integrates marginality, inequality, and symbolic interactionism, with a focus on ethnography and qualitative methods. She is a Fellow of Advance HE (2023) and a member of the Housing Studies Association.
Her doctoral research explored interactional barriers to exiting homelessness through an ethnography of a homeless hostel. Current projects address homelessness policy, parental advocacy, and municipal responses to poverty during crises like the pandemic. Her work spans disciplines such as urban studies, public health, and social policy.
Publications highlight themes like stigma in drug use, municipal governance of homelessness, and advocacy in child welfare. She employs innovative methods like visual ethnography to study public perceptions. Grants and collaborations involve interdisciplinary teams across the UK and Canada. Fiona is affiliated with the CASCADE research group and contributes to policy-relevant social science research.
