Rachel Brown is a Research Fellow at the DECIPHer Centre within the School of Social Sciences at Cardiff University. She specializes in public health research, focusing on youth substance use, mental health interventions, and policy analysis. Her roles include leading the Health Improvement module on the Masters in Public Health and co-convening the Process Evaluation methods training course. She currently leads evaluations of Welsh Government initiatives, including the Framework for a Whole School Approach to Mental Wellbeing and an NIHR-funded study on e-cigarette provision in homeless settings. Her PhD research (2016) investigated alcohol use in new university students, adopting a socio-ecological approach.
Education: PhD in Public Health from Cardiff University (2016). Professional Experience: Secondment as Senior Research Officer at Welsh Government (2015–2016), Project Officer (Students and Alcohol) at NUS Wales (2010–2012), and Substance Misuse Worker at Inroads Street Drugs Project (2005–2009). She has secured grants totaling £43,053 from Welsh Government for mental health research.
Research Interests: Mental health in educational settings, tobacco control, e-cigarette regulation, and policy implementation. Grants: Welsh Government-funded study on whole school approaches to mental health, NIHR-funded research on e-cigarettes in homeless populations.
Teaching: Contributes to undergraduate and postgraduate modules in public health, sociology of health, and child/youth policy. Supervises dissertation students and reviews progress for two PhD candidates.
