Jonathan A Helton is a Professor of Saxophone at the School of Music of the University of Florida. He has maintained an active career as a concert saxophonist, performing globally across the United States, Canada, Europe, Asia, and South America with orchestras, wind ensembles, and chamber music groups. Helton is also a past President of the North American Saxophone Alliance and has served on editorial boards and in leadership roles for music education organizations.
He earned a Bachelor of Music from the North Carolina School of the Arts, followed by a Master of Music and Doctor of Music from Northwestern University, studying under Frederick Hemke and James Houlik. His research interests focus on chamber music collaboration, saxophone pedagogy, and contemporary classical compositions for saxophone and cello duos.
Helton frequently collaborates with cellist Steven Thomas in the Helton-Thomas Duo, with performances centered on modern works and tango arrangements. His discography includes recordings on Navona, Centaur, and Mark Records, and he has presented at major international conferences like the World Saxophone Congress and the College Music Society National Conference.
As an educator, Helton has developed over 300 performances and masterclasses and maintains active roles as an Artist/Clinician for Conn-Selmer and Henri Selmer Paris. He has also contributed to tax strategies for independent music teachers and saxophone equipment recommendations.
