Jon Wheat is a Professor of Biomechanics at the Department of Sport Science, Nottingham Trent University (NTU), and leads the Sport, Health and Performance Enhancement (SHAPE) research centre. He serves as Research Department Chair and Impact Champion for REF Unit of Assessment 24. Previously, he held senior roles at Sheffield Hallam University, including Associate Dean for Research and Innovation in the College of Health, Wellbeing and Life Sciences. He also holds adjunct/visiting professorships at La Trobe University (Melbourne) and Sheffield Hallam University.
His research focuses on biomechanics influenced by Ecological Dynamics, emphasizing wearable sensor systems for field-based measurements and within-individual variability in sports and health contexts. Key areas include gait analysis in stroke survivors, postural control, military load carriage biomechanics, and collaborations with British Cycling on cycling biomechanics. His work spans interdisciplinary applications in sports science, military ergonomics, and neurological rehabilitation.
Recent publications highlight advancements in gait analysis via video interpolation, wearable sensor validation, and biomechanical studies of boxing, dressage, and cycling. His military-related research addresses injury risks in load carriage, while clinical work explores orthotic interventions for multiple sclerosis patients.
- Grants and Collaboration: Projects funded by Australian Defence Science Research Group, UK Sports Institute, and industry partnerships.
- Teams/Labs: Leads the SHAPE research centre and collaborates with global institutions on applied biomechanics initiatives.
