Jon Mehlferber, Ph.D., is a Professor in the Department of Visual Arts at the University of North Georgia. He has been a graphic designer since 1982, working across advertising agencies, universities, and freelance projects. With over three decades of teaching experience beginning in 1990, he has instructed at institutions in Louisiana, Virginia, and Georgia. His expertise includes Sculpture, 3D Printing, Digital 3D Design, Art Theory, Art Criticism, and Graphic Design.
Dr. Mehlferber holds a B.F.A. in Art from the University of Central Florida (1986), an M.F.A. in Sculpture from the University of Georgia (1988), and a Ph.D. in Art Theory and Criticism from the University of Georgia (1993).
His research interests focus on the integration of technology in art, particularly through 3D printing and digital design, alongside theoretical and critical studies in art. His work bridges traditional sculptural practices with modern digital innovation, emphasizing accessibility through adaptive technologies.
Notable awards include the 2019 First Place Award at the DownEast National Juried Sculpture Exhibition, the 2013 Award of Excellence from Manhattan Arts International, and a $5,000 Presidential Innovation Award (2013) for creating low-cost adaptive devices for disabled children.
Dr. Mehlferber has collaborated on grants, including the 2013 Innovation Award with Alison Alhadef and Terrie Millard. He teaches courses ranging from foundational design to advanced digital fabrication and maintains an office in the Choice St Arts Complex A, 105, on the Dahlonega campus.
