Jon Lewis is a Professor in the Department of Anthropology, Geospatial and Earth Sciences at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP), part of the Kopchick College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. His academic journey includes a BS from the University of Vermont, MS from the University of Tennessee, PhD from the University of Connecticut, and a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California, Davis. He has held roles such as Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and was a trailing partner during his postdoctoral years, emphasizing community-building and flexibility in dual-career academia.
Research focuses on structural geology, earthquake geology, and neotectonics, with fieldwork in Taiwan, Costa Rica, and Japan. Notable projects include NSF-funded studies on Taiwan’s arc-continent collision and collaborations in the Nankai Trough Seismogenic Zone Experiment. He co-developed the STEMSEAS program to diversify marine geoscience participation and improve equity in STEM through seagoing experiences.
Teaching spans courses like Dynamic Earth and Research Methods in Geosciences, incorporating innovative strategies such as visual engagement to boost student interaction.
