Dr. John Wood was a long-standing faculty member of the Department of Political Science at the University of British Columbia (UBC), serving for 35 years. He currently holds the title of Honorary Professor in the Institute of Asian Research within the Faculty of Arts. His work focused on Comparative Politics, with a deep specialization in the politics of India and South Asia.
Education:
John Wood earned a Ph.D. in Political Science from Columbia University.
Research Interests:
His research spanned multidisciplinary topics including federalism, nationalism, ethnic conflict, party recruitment strategies, environmental policy, human rights, and Canada-India relations. He employed eclectic theoretical approaches to study these areas, particularly through the lens of South Asian politics.
Grants & Administrative Roles:
He chaired a $1 million fundraising campaign and was the founding Director of the Centre for India and South Asian Research (CISAR). In 2008, he led a collaborative research project on Community Natural Resource Management in India, funded by the Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute. His contributions extended to national roles, such as serving on the executive of the Canadian Asian Studies Association (President, 2002-2004) and the Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute's Board of Directors (President, 1994-1996).
