Stephen D. McDowell is the John H. Phipps Professor in the School of Communication at Florida State University (since 2006) and serves as Assistant Provost for International Initiatives (since 2018). He previously held roles as Department Chair (2002-2013), Associate Dean (2013-2021), and Interim Dean of the College of Communication and Information (2021-2023).

McDowell's publications include co-edited works on South Asian media politics and authored analyses of India's communication sector reforms. His fellowship experiences include roles with Canada's Department of Communications, the Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute, and a U.S. Congressional Fellowship through the American Political Science Association.
