Christophe Jaffrelot is a distinguished CNRS Senior Research Fellow at Sciences Po's Center for International Studies (CERI), where he teaches across three different schools. A leading scholar of South Asian politics, he previously served as director of CERI from 2000 to 2008 and was elected president of the French Association of Political Science (AFSP) in July 2020. His extensive academic affiliations include positions at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, Princeton University (as a Global Scholar from 2012-2015), and King's India Institute in London.
Jaffrelot earned his degrees from Sciences Po (1985), Sorbonne University (1986), EHESS (1986), and INALCO (1990), completing his Ph.D. in political science at Sciences Po in 1991. He joined CNRS in 1991, receiving the CNRS Bronze Medal in 1993, and became a CNRS Senior Research Fellow in 2002. He has served as president of the Political Science section of the French National Committee for Scientific Research (CNRS) from 2012 to 2016.
His research focuses on nationalism, religion, ethnic conflicts, and South Asian politics, with particular emphasis on India and Pakistan. Recent publications reveal a strong focus on Indian democracy under Modi, Hindutva politics, federalism in South Asia, and the Indo-Pacific geopolitical landscape. His 2025 publications show continued engagement with India-China relations, Hindu nationalism, and European strategic positioning in the Indo-Pacific region.

Jaffrelot maintains an active supervisory and collaborative role through his editorial positions and research projects. As senior editor of the CERI-Sciences Po book series 'Comparative Politics and International Studies,' he shapes scholarly discourse in the field. His co-direction of the 'Muslims in India' research project, funded by the Henry Luce Foundation and involving Sciences Po, Columbia University, and Princeton University, demonstrates his significant research leadership. He serves on multiple scientific councils including at Heidelberg University's Südasien Institut, the Center for the Study of Multilevel Federalism in New Delhi, and Göttingen University's South Asia Center.
At the Center for International Studies (CERI), Jaffrelot contributes to one of France's premier research centers for international relations and political economy. His work bridges academic research with policy relevance through his role as permanent consultant to the Policy Planning Staff of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs. His leadership at Ashoka University's Trivedi Center for Political Data further demonstrates his commitment to advancing empirical research on Indian politics.
