John’s pedagogical approach emphasizes cultural contact through diverse texts, histories, and places, fostering analytical engagement and open dialogue. At UMSL, he is developing courses such as 'Spanish for the Sciences' and a seminar on global movements of people in Spanish and Latin American contexts. His research explores ecological cultural production, transatlantic ecocriticism, and the intersection of environmental disasters, sovereignty, and identity in Iberian contexts. His book project, Beyond the Niche, investigates how nature and ecology challenge fixed notions of cultural and national identity. Recent contributions include an essay on the Prestige oil spill in Ethics of Life: Contemporary Iberian Debates and a framework for transatlantic ecocriticism in Submergence, focusing on hydroelectric dams and archipelagoes.
