Katherine Ostrom is an Associate Professor of Spanish and Portuguese at Emory University, where she has taught since 2011. She specializes in Latin American literature, with a focus on crime fiction by women writers, LGBTQ and Black representation, and issues related to pregnancy and abortion in literature. Her research spans Argentina, Brazil, and México, with notable publications on authors like Claudia Piñeiro, Luisa Valenzuela, and Sonia Coutinho.
Education: B.A. in Romance Languages and Literatures from the University of Chicago; M.A. and Ph.D. in Hispanic and Lusophone Literatures and Cultures from the University of Minnesota.
Teaching and Outreach: Ostrom has directed Emory's Argentine Studies summer program in Buenos Aires since 2023 and led Iberian Studies (2015) and Brazilian Studies (2018) programs. She created a new course on Spanish for Health Care in 2024 and hosts weekly language practice sessions (Bate-Papo for Portuguese and Charlemos for Spanish).
