Verónica Garibotto

Verónica Garibotto is the John D. Stephens Distinguished Professor in Latin American Studies at the University of Kansas, Department of Spanish and Portuguese. Her research focuses on 19th-21st century Latin American literature, film, and cultural studies, with emphasis on psychoanalysis, intersectionality, and political discourse. She holds awards for research and teaching, including the Jessie Marie Senor Cramer Annual Award and Root Professorship.

Education: PhD (Hispanic Languages and Literatures, University of Pittsburgh, 2008), MA (University of Pittsburgh, 2004), Licenciatura en Letras (Universidad de Buenos Aires, 2002).

Research interests include the intersection of psychoanalysis with public life, reproductive rights, and Latin American cinema. Her books Rethinking Testimonial Cinema and Crisis y reemergencia analyze postdictatorship Argentina and foundational ideologies. Current projects explore psychoanalysis and intersectionality, and reproductive justice in the Americas.

Her edited volumes include Psychoanalysis as Social and Political Discourse in Latin America and the Caribbean and The Latin American Road Movie. She serves on editorial boards of PMLA and Toma Uno: Revista de Cine.

Advising highlights include guiding students on topics like Nazism in Mexican/Argentine literature, Andean Indigenous films, LGBTQIA+ identity, and Afro-Mexican cultural production. Recent articles address trauma theory, abortion discourses, and reproductive landscapes in Latin America.
