John Tooze

John Tooze (1949–2021) was a British biochemist and molecular biologist. He held academic and administrative roles across institutions including King's College London, European Molecular Biology Organisation (EMBO), and The Rockefeller University. He specialized in biophysics and molecular biology, transitioning into scientific leadership roles.

Education: B.A. (Cambridge, 1961), PhD in Biophysics (University of London, 1965). Postdoc at Harvard (1965–1967).

Research Interests: Molecular biology, biophysics, and scientific infrastructure management. He contributed to founding EMBO Journal and served as Executive Secretary of EMBO (1973–1994).

Awards: EMBO Gold Medal (1986), Royal Society Fellowship (1994), honorary Doctor of Science (2016).

Administration: Vice President for Scientific Operations at Rockefeller University (2005–2013), roles at Cancer Research UK (2002–2005), and leadership at EMBL (1993–1994). Retired in 2014.
