Brian Flowers was a renowned academic and administrator in physics. He held key roles such as Chancellor of the University of Manchester (1994–2001), Vice-Chancellor of the University of London (1985–1990), and Rector of Imperial College London (1973–1985). Earlier, he served as the Langworthy Professor of Physics at the University of Manchester (1961–1972) and Professor of Theoretical Physics there (1958–1961). He also chaired the Science Research Council (1967–1973) and conducted research at the Atomic Energy Research Establishment (AERE).
His research focused on nuclear physics and atomic energy, contributing to foundational advancements in these fields. Notable honors include the Glazebrook Medal (1987), Officer of the French Légion d'honneur (1981), and knighthood (1969). He was elevated to the House of Lords as Baron Flowers (1979) and became a Fellow of the Royal Society (1961).
Flowers' administrative leadership spanned universities and national research institutions. His legacy includes shaping academic governance and advancing atomic energy research post-WWII. He passed away in 2010 at age 86.
