Philippe Contamine (19..-2022) was a distinguished historian specializing in medieval studies, the history of nobility, and military history. He held academic positions at the University of Paris IV (Paris-Sorbonne) from 1989, Université de Paris X at Nanterre, and earlier at Université de Nancy (1965–1973). Elected to the Academy of Europe in 1993, he contributed significantly to historical scholarship.
