Olivier Claude Jean Chaline

Olivier Claude Jean Chaline is a distinguished Professor of Early Modern History at Université Paris-Sorbonne (Paris IV), where he has held a professorship since 2001. Previously, he served as Professor of Early Modern History at Université de Haute-Bretagne Rennes II (1999-2001) and as a senior lecturer at the prestigious École normale supérieure (1989-1999). His academic journey began with exceptional achievement, placing first in the agrégation d'histoire examination in 1987 after studying at École normale supérieure from 1984 to 1989.

Chaline's research interests focus on Early Modern French History, particularly Nobility and Parlements of the XVII and XVIII centuries, Central European Early Modern History with emphasis on the Habsburg Monarchy and Bohemia, and Early Modern War Studies, especially the Thirty Years War and Naval History of the same period. His scholarly approach integrates political, religious, and military dimensions of early modern European history.

His extensive publication record reveals a consistent scholarly trajectory with significant contributions to understanding French monarchy, Bohemian history, and European conflicts. The publications demonstrate increasing specialization in Central European history alongside continued work on French institutions, with notable emphasis on the interplay between religious movements and political power structures throughout early modern Europe.
