Julian Swann is Professor of Early Modern History and Pro-Vice Master for Research at Birkbeck. His scholarship examines French political culture from Louis XIV to the Revolution, analyzing relations between monarchy and elites. Current work includes a major Louis XV biography.
Research investigates how ruling consensus formed after French religious wars and subsequently unraveled. Specializations include parlement-judicial politics, disgrace mechanisms, and provincial governance. Recent articles analyze Louis XV's wartime leadership and legal conflicts between monarch and Parlement.
He edits the European History Quarterly (since 2011) and teaches courses on early modern history. Monographs include studies of disgrace (Exile, Imprisonment, or Death, 2017) and Burgundy's Estates General (2003).
