Prof Guy Rowlands is a Professor of History at the University of St Andrews' School of History, specializing in the history of war, European state formation, and international relations in the early modern period. His work focuses on France under Louis XIV and XV, particularly fiscal-military systems, military entrepreneurs, and state governance. He has authored influential books such as The Dynastic State and the Army under Louis XIV and The Financial Decline of a Great Power. Prof Rowlands has advised multiple PhD students and holds prestigious awards including the Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellowship and British Academy/Leverhulme Senior Research Fellowship.
