Walter Greiner was a renowned full Professor of Physics at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt/Main, Germany, and Founding Director of the Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies. He held leadership roles such as Dean of the Physics Faculty (2001–2002) and served as Permanent Consultant to the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt since 1976. He passed away on October 5, 2016.
Greiner earned his Ph.D. from Freiburg University (1961) with a thesis on nuclear polarization in μ-mesic atoms, preceded by an M.Sc. in Plasma Physics from TH Darmstadt (1960) and a B.Sc./F.Sc. in Physics/Mathematics from Frankfurt University (1956–1958). His research spanned atomic, nuclear, and particle physics, including groundbreaking work on superheavy nuclei and extensions of the periodic system.
He declined multiple professorships in the U.S. to remain in Germany and became a globally honored scholar, receiving over 14 honorary doctoral degrees from institutions worldwide. His accolades include the Max Born Prize, Otto Hahn Prize, and Alexander von Humboldt Medal.
