Nicholas Stern is the IG Patel Professor of Economics and Government at the London School of Economics and Political Science, where he chairs the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment and co-chairs the India Observatory. His academic career spans institutions like Oxford, Warwick, MIT, École Polytechnique, and the Indian Statistical Institute. Stern served as chief economist at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (1994–1999) and the World Bank (2000–2003). He was knighted in 2004 and became Baron Stern of Brentford in 2007.
- Research Focus: Climate change economics, market failures, increasing returns to scale, and policy frameworks for global decarbonization. His seminal 2006 Stern Review redefined climate change as an economic imperative. Recent work emphasizes the need for economics to adapt to existential risks and transformative systemic change.
